What Is Phlebotomy?
Phlebotomy is the clinical practice of taking blood samples most commonly from a vein in the arm for testing, diagnosis, and monitoring. Blood tests support the diagnosis of conditions such as diabetes, anaemia and infection, which is why phlebotomists are needed in virtually every part of the NHS and private healthcare, from GP surgeries to hospital wards and diagnostic labs.
A trained phlebotomist doesn’t just need a steady hand. They need to work to infection-control standards, put anxious patients at ease, correctly label and handle samples for the lab, and know what to do when a vein is difficult to find or a patient feels unwell.
