What Is Basic Life Support (BLS)?

Basic Life Support (BLS) is the immediate response to someone in cardiac arrest, before advanced medical help arrives: recognising the arrest, calling for emergency help, performing chest compressions and rescue breaths, and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) as soon as one is available. In the UK, this is taught to the Resuscitation Council UK’s Adult Basic Life Support Guidelines, last updated in 2021.

Early, confident action in the first few minutes after a cardiac arrest has a direct bearing on survival which is why BLS training is treated as an essential, frequently mandatory skill across UK healthcare and care settings.

Course Overview

This course teaches the full adult BLS sequence checking safety and response, opening the airway, recognising abnormal or absent breathing, starting chest compressions, delivering rescue breaths, and using an AED through hands-on practice on training manikins, alongside choking response and use of the recovery position. It’s designed for healthcare staff who need this as a core clinical skill, not as a general public awareness session.

What the Course Covers

  • The Resuscitation Council UK adult BLS sequence: safety, response, airway, breathing, chest compressions
  • Compression-only CPR and combined compressions with rescue breaths, in line with current guidance
  • Correct hand placement, compression rate and depth, practised on a training manikin
  • Safe and effective use of an AED
  • Recognising and responding to choking in an adult
  • Use of the recovery position where appropriate
  • Working as part of a team response in a clinical environment

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Recognise cardiac arrest and initiate an emergency response without delay
  • Perform effective chest compressions and rescue breaths in line with Resuscitation Council UK guidance
  • Safely operate an AED as part of the resuscitation sequence
  • Respond appropriately to an adult who is choking
  • Place a casualty in the recovery position where clinically appropriate

Who Is This Course For?

  • Nurses, healthcare assistants and allied health professionals — many roles require in-date BLS as a mandatory or statutory training requirement
  • GP practice, dental practice and community healthcare staff
  • Care home and domiciliary care staff
  • Internationally trained healthcare professionals preparing for UK practice
  • Anyone in a clinical or patient-facing role needing to complete or refresh their BLS certification

What Course Completion Means

Completing this course confirms a learner has been taught and has practised the current adult BLS sequence to the standard assessed on the day, including AED use and choking response. Employers in clinical settings generally require staff to hold an in-date BLS certificate as part of mandatory training compliance, and to refresh it at a set interval this is set by employer policy rather than by any single national rule, so learners should check their own organisation’s requirement. Completing a BLS course does not certify someone in Advanced Life Support (ALS) or other advanced resuscitation roles, which require separate, more extensive training.
