What Is Moving & Handling Training?
Moving and handling training teaches staff how to move, support or reposition people (and loads) safely, reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injury to both the person being moved and the member of staff doing the moving. In a healthcare or care setting this specifically means people-handling assisting someone to stand, transfer between bed and chair, reposition in bed, or use hoists and slings which carries different risks from moving inanimate objects and is treated as its own discipline.
Poor moving and handling practice is a leading cause of work-related back pain and musculoskeletal injury among healthcare and care staff, and it can also cause pain, bruising and loss of dignity for the person being moved. That’s the problem this training is designed to prevent.
The Legal Basis
Employers in the UK have duties under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended) to avoid hazardous manual handling where reasonably practicable, and where it can’t be avoided, to assess the risk and take steps to reduce it including providing appropriate training. This sits alongside the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and, where handling equipment such as hoists is used, the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) 1998, which govern safe use and inspection of that equipment.
Course Overview
This course combines the legal and risk-assessment theory with hands-on technique practice — because moving and handling is a physical skill that can’t be learned from a slide deck alone. Learners work through both inanimate load handling principles and person-handling techniques, including safe use of handling equipment such as slide sheets and hoists.
What the Course Covers
- Anatomy and mechanics of the spine, and how poor technique causes injury
- Employer and employee responsibilities under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
- Principles of dynamic risk assessment before a moving and handling task
- Ergonomic principles for safer moving and handling
- Safe techniques for assisting a person to stand, sit, transfer and reposition
- Safe use of handling equipment — slide sheets, transfer boards, hoists and slings
- Recognising when a task requires two or more staff, or specialist equipment
- Promoting the individual’s independence and dignity during handling tasks
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
- Identify moving and handling risk factors and apply a dynamic risk assessment before carrying out a task
- Describe their responsibilities, and their employer’s, under relevant health and safety legislation
- Demonstrate safer moving and handling technique for common care tasks
- Use handling equipment correctly and understand when specialist equipment is required
- Recognise unsafe practice and know when to seek support rather than proceed alone
Who Is This Course For?
- Healthcare assistants, support workers and care staff in hospital, care home or domiciliary settings
- Nurses, nursing associates and student nurses
- Ambulance and patient transport staff
- Anyone in a care role whose job includes assisting people to move
- Staff needing initial (not refresher) moving and handling training, or a refresher
