What Is PMVA Training?

PMVA stands for Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression. It’s training for staff who may encounter behaviour that challenges in mental health, learning disability, acute, and some general care settings covering how to recognise early warning signs, de-escalate a situation using communication and non-physical techniques, and, only where genuinely necessary and proportionate, how to use safe physical intervention as a last resort.

The emphasis across current national standards is firmly on prevention: reducing the likelihood of a situation escalating, and reducing reliance on restrictive physical intervention wherever possible.

What the Course Covers

  • Understanding triggers, warning signs and the escalation cycle in behaviour that challenges
  • Communication-based de-escalation techniques
  • Personal safety and breakaway (disengagement) skills
  • Legal and ethical framework — including the Mental Capacity Act, human rights principles and the Mental Health Units (Use of Force) Act 2018
  • Reducing restrictive practice and understanding proportionality, necessity and least-restrictive intervention
  • Post-incident support and reporting

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Recognise early signs of escalating behaviour and apply appropriate de-escalation techniques
  • Explain the legal and ethical framework governing the use of restrictive practice in health and social care
  • Describe the principle of least-restrictive intervention and why prevention is prioritised over physical response
  • Apply personal safety/breakaway techniques where covered on the course
  • Identify when and how to seek support, and the post-incident process to follow

Who Is This Course For?

  • Mental health nursing and support staff
  • Learning disability and autism service staff
  • Emergency department and acute ward staff who may encounter escalating behaviour
  • Care home and residential care staff supporting people with dementia or behaviour that challenges

What Course Completion Means

Completing this course means a learner has covered the de-escalation principles, legal framework and any physical skills taught on the day, to the standard assessed. It does not, by itself, authorise a member of staff to use restrictive physical intervention in their workplace that authorisation depends on employer policy, the specific setting’s risk profile, and often a documented local competency sign-off in addition to the course certificate. Restrictive practice, where it’s used at all, should always be a last resort, proportionate to risk, and used for the shortest time necessary that principle sits above any single training course.
