NMC OSCE Marking Criteria 2025: Complete Guide to Passing Your Exam

Understanding NMC OSCE Marking Criteria: Your Complete 2025 Guide

Planning to take the NMC OSCE to become a registered nurse in the UK? It can seem tricky, but understanding how the marking works can really help you prepare and succeed. Here’s a simple and friendly guide that breaks down the NMC OSCE marking criteria so you know exactly what to expect.

Step 1: What Happens at Each OSCE Station?

The OSCE exam has 10 stations, including APIE, Clinical skills, Professional values, and Evidence-Based Practice. At each station, an assessor watches you and uses a marking criterion to determine whether you fully demonstrated the skill, partly showed it, or didn’t do it.

They also watch closely to make sure you’re safe and professional because these matters just as much as technical skills. If you do something unsafe, it’s an automatic fail for that station — that’s called a “red flag.”

Step 2: Showing Professionalism Is Key

Throughout the exam, you’re expected to behave as a professional nurse would, following the NMC Code. It means treating patients with respect, communicating clearly, and always putting safety first. Being professional isn’t just about what you do, but how you do it — your attitude counts!

Step 3: The Silent Stations Explained

Besides practical skills stations, two written stations test your decision-making and knowledge:

  • Professional Values Station: You’ll be given scenarios about situations like witnessing bullying, social media issues, or drug errors. You need to explain how you’d handle it, referencing the ethical rules nurses follow.
  • Evidence-Based Practice Station: Here, you get research info and a case, and your task is to show you can use evidence to plan the best care, like preventing pressure sores, cervical screening, or managing diabetes.

Step 4: Passing the OSCE Exam

You must clear every station to pass the whole OSCE exam. If you only fail a few stations, you can resit those specific stations instead of the whole exam, which is a big help!

Since December 2023, there’s also a “Viva” option. That means at the end of one station, you might get to answer a quick question to fix a small mistake, like forgetting to sign your notes. But you can’t use this to fix anything unsafe or serious.

Step 5: What’s New in NMC OSCE for 2025?

The NMC updates the marking criteria regularly to keep them up to date with modern nursing practices. For example, in 2025:

  • You no longer need to wear PPE for some clinical stations, reflecting current real-world practice
  • Updated scenarios reflect contemporary healthcare challenges
  • Small procedural updates ensure the OSCE stays fair and relevant

Key Tips to Pass Your NMC OSCE

Knowing how you will be marked takes away some of the guesswork. Here are essential tips to help you succeed:

  • Practice Your Skills: Regular hands-on practice builds muscle memory and confidence
  • Think Like a Nurse: Apply clinical reasoning to every scenario
  • Show Professionalism: Your attitude and communication matter as much as technical skills
