Key 2025 Changes to the NMC OSCE Station Exams
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has made several important updates to the OSCE station exams for 2025. These changes are designed to keep the exam current with clinical practice and fair for all candidates. Here’s a simple breakdown of what you need to know:
Longer Station Times
- Fluid Balance station:Â Time increased from 12 to 14 minutes. This gives you more time to measure and record fluid intake and output carefully.
- Midstream Urine (MSU) & Urinalysis station:Â Extended from 8 to 12 minutes to allow safe sample collection and testing.
Updated Aseptic Non-Touch Technique (ANTT)
You only need to wear gloves and aprons when clinically necessary, not all the time. This matches real nursing procedures where PPE use is based on risk assessment.
The “clean hand – dirty hand” method has been removed. Focus on good hand hygiene and aseptic technique instead, as seen in modern clinical settings.
Changes to Subcutaneous Injection Station
- Prefilled Insulin pens are now used instead of syringes in the adult and children’s OSCE to follow.
- You don’t have to verbalize the injection administration time anymore, simplifying the process.
- Gloves and aprons are only needed if clinically indicated, encouraging professional judgment.
APIE Station Scenario Reduction
Two scenarios (Asthma and Anxiety & Depression) have been removed.
This reduces APIE scenarios from 12 to 10, allowing you to focus your study on the most relevant cases.
Stations and Scenarios Removed
- Nasopharyngeal suctioning and In Hospital Resuscitation is no longer tested in Clinical Skills.
- Certain Professional Values & Behaviors scenarios like concealment of bed status, confidentiality breaches, false representation and professional confrontation have been retired.
- Evidence-Based Practice scenarios on Autism Spectrum Disorder and cranberry juice use for UTIs have also been removed.
Other Important Updates
- A new national Pediatric Early Warning Score (PEWS) chart is included in the exam materials, so be sure to learn it.
- Candidates resitting stations may face different scenarios or medication charts to avoid rote learning.
- Minor changes to marking criteria clarify PPE use and insulin pen techniques, improving fairness and clarity.
These updates help make the NMC OSCE exam more realistic and aligned with current healthcare standards. Staying informed about these changes allows you to adapt your preparation effectively and approach the exam with confidence.
